Packet loss triangulation with a network fault finding system<\/span><\/h4>

Most network monitoring relies upon the network devices themselves providing the signal that they are healthy or unhealthy via syslog messages, SNMP, telemetry or custom APIs.<\/p>

In large scale networks, we can’t trust the network devices to accurately report health in all the possible failure cases that may exist. At Facebook, in addition to standard monitoring tools, we also actively probe our networks with test traffic to ensure the platform is behaving as we expect. With active monitoring, we can find the network elements that don\u2019t know they are dropping\/mangling packets even when they exist several layers deep inside the network.<\/p>

During the presentation, we will show how we built a sample open source system that achieves the same result using open source tools and perform a live demo with a lab network from start to finish, introducing packet loss and showing how the system can identify where the loss is occurring in real time. Philip Smith has been working in the Internet industry since the early 1990s after catching the Internet bug in the mid 1980s while at University. He runs his own consulting company, PFS Internet Development. Philip spends some of his time working for the Network Startup Resource Centre as a Senior Network Engineer and Training Coordinator, assisting with Network Operations Groups coordination, and providing network design assistance and training around the Pacific, South and South East Asia, the Middle East and Africa. He previously worked at APNIC as Learning and Development Director, where his team’s responsibilities ranged from Training, APNIC Conferences and Events, Network Operations Group support, Technical Programmes such as IPv6 Deployment, Internet Exchange Points, and Rootname Server deployments, and the Information Society Innovation Fund grants programme. Before APNIC, he was a member of the Internet Infrastructure Group in CTO Consulting Engineering of Cisco Systems for more than thirteen years. He also served for 3 years on the Board of Trustees of the Internet Society. Prior to joining Cisco, he spent five years at PIPEX (incorporated into UUNET, and now part of Verizon’s global ISP business), the UK’s first commercial ISP, where he was Head of Network Engineering. As is common with startups in a rapidly growing marketplace, Philip gained deep experience in all of the engineering roles in an ISP, from support engineer, network operations, engineering, and development, before assuming responsibility for the entire UK network operation. Building a scalable network event executor using GO<\/span><\/h4>

With ever increasing growing networks, automation plays a critical role. We want engineers to have time to work on exciting projects versus staring at graphs 24\/7 and reacting to events.<\/p>

In this talk, we provide an introduction on how our monitoring and remediation systems work; we will also describe the initial steps on how to build a simple remediation system – scalable machinery that can watch for symptoms of errors\/failures and react to these in a pre-defined way.<\/p>

We will cover not only architecture, but also give recommendations on how to keep the system scalable. The talk will present a walkthrough of an open source system (https:\/\/github.com\/facebookexperimental\/goar<\/a>) written in GO – a static typing language with concurrency built in its philosophy.
